Is Experience the Best Teacher?

Text: 1 Corinthians 10:11–12

Exhortation:

Experience is undoubtedly an important teacher. Sitting in a driving class and learning the basic rules of driving, traffic signs and road safety does not automatically make someone a good driver until the person actually gets behind the wheel and experiences driving. This is why experience is highly valued, especially when companies are looking to fill key positions.

However, not every experience is worth having personally. Some experiences can be painful, destructive and even fatal. Learning everything through personal experience may therefore be unwise because some lessons may come at a price that we cannot afford to pay. Wisdom teaches us that we do not have to make every mistake ourselves before we learn from it.

This is why the Word of God points us to the experiences of those who have gone before us. 1 Corinthians 10:11 says, “Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.” God recorded the victories and failures of people in Scripture so that we can learn from them without having to repeat their mistakes.

You do not have to experience every disaster to learn that it is dangerous. Wisdom is learning from the experience of others before their mistakes become your own experience.

Action Nugget: Ask God for the humility and wisdom to learn from the experiences of others. Study the Word, listen to godly counsel, and pay attention to the warnings God has already given you. Do not insist on learning every lesson the hard way.

Free Indeed

Exhortation:

October is a month of freedom. As Nigeria celebrates another Independence Day, we are reminded that freedom is more than being released from external control; it is also the liberty to live according to God’s will. A nation may gain political independence, yet individuals can remain bound by sin, destructive habits, fear, anger, bitterness, lust, greed and other works of the flesh.

Jesus declared, “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” True freedom begins with Christ. The greatest liberty is not simply the absence of restrictions, but the power to say no to sin and yes to righteousness. When Christ sets a person free, the chains of the old life lose their authority, and the believer receives grace to walk in newness of life.

As we celebrate Nigeria’s independence, let us also pray for the freedom of our nation from corruption, injustice, insecurity, poverty, violence and every force that hinders national progress. May Nigeria experience the freedom that produces peace, justice, responsible leadership and prosperity for her people.

This October, may Christ break every chain around your life, and may Nigeria move forward in righteousness, peace and true freedom.

Prayer Nuggets:

  1. Father, thank You for the gift of a new month and for the freedom we have through Jesus Christ. Let October bring fresh grace, victory and divine direction into my life, in Jesus’ name.
  2. Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit, deliver me from every bondage of sin and give me grace to walk in righteousness, in Jesus’ name.
  3. Every habit, desire and work of the flesh that is contrary to God’s will in my life, lose your hold over me, in Jesus’ name.
  4. Father, set me free from anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, lust, greed, pride and every attitude that hinders my spiritual growth, in Jesus’ name.
  5. Lord Jesus, let every hidden chain that has kept me from fulfilling Your purpose for my life be broken, and establish me in genuine freedom, in Jesus’ name.
  6. Father, let your glory in my life in this last quarter of the year surpass those of the previous three quarters put together in Jesus name.
  7. Father, in this new month, let Nigeria arise into a season of peace, righteousness, stability and sustainable progress, and let Your purpose for our nation be fulfilled, in Jesus’ name.
