Don’t Drift Away

Text: Hebrews 2:1

Exhortation:

Many who started the Christian race well are gradually drifting away. The very things they once repented of are subtly creeping back into their lives. They have yielded to the subtle whispers of the devil, who has cleverly repackaged sin and presented it in an attractive form. Sadly, they have become like the dog that returned to its vomit (2 Peter 2:22).

Backsliding is usually gradual and often goes unnoticed. The unwatchful believer drifts away through little compromises here and there. The crack begins very small and seemingly harmless, but it gradually widens until the lizards begin to penetrate. What was once considered unacceptable soon becomes normal.

Once sin gains entrance, the Holy Spirit begins to withdraw from that vessel. If there is no genuine repentance, the devil gradually gains ground, and the heart becomes hardened. Such a person may still attend church and maintain a religious appearance, but inwardly, spiritual decline has begun. Doubt replaces conviction, and before long, the individual begins to criticize the very truths of Scripture that were once cherished and defended.

Believers must therefore remain watchful, prayerful, and vigilant. The Bible warns, “Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall” (1 Corinthians 10:12). Those seemingly insignificant attitudes of “It doesn’t matter” should never be ignored. They must be confessed and forsaken because they are the little foxes that spoil the vines (Song of Solomon 2:15). A life of consistent fellowship with God, prompt repentance, and unwavering obedience is the surest safeguard against spiritual drift.

Action Nugget: Repent today. Ask God for mercy, and return to your first love. Do not allow today’s little compromise to become tomorrow’s great downfall.
