Text: 1 Corinthians 10:11–12
Author: Pastor Adedeji Fadehan
Exhortation:
Experience is undoubtedly an important teacher. Sitting in a driving class and learning the basic rules of driving, traffic signs and road safety does not automatically make someone a good driver until the person actually gets behind the wheel and experiences driving. This is why experience is highly valued, especially when companies are looking to fill key positions.
However, not every experience is worth having personally. Some experiences can be painful, destructive and even fatal. Learning everything through personal experience may therefore be unwise because some lessons may come at a price that we cannot afford to pay. Wisdom teaches us that we do not have to make every mistake ourselves before we learn from it.
This is why the Word of God points us to the experiences of those who have gone before us. 1 Corinthians 10:11 says, “Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.” God recorded the victories and failures of people in Scripture so that we can learn from them without having to repeat their mistakes.
You do not have to experience every disaster to learn that it is dangerous. Wisdom is learning from the experience of others before their mistakes become your own experience.
Action Nugget: Ask God for the humility and wisdom to learn from the experiences of others. Study the Word, listen to godly counsel, and pay attention to the warnings God has already given you. Do not insist on learning every lesson the hard way.
