Text : 2 Samuel 21:1-9
Author : Pastor Adedeji Fadehan
Exhortation :
A whole nation suffered from three years of famine because of injustice done to a group of people who seemed powerless. How could this be? Though the Gibeonites were treated as slaves, God did not overlook their pain. He rose to defend them, and Israel, under King David, was compelled to address the injustice done during Saul’s reign.
This reveals a profound truth: no one is truly powerless when God is their defender. The Gibeonites had no army, no political influence, yet heaven took up their case. Their silent suffering spoke loudly before God, and justice was eventually enforced, even at a great national cost.
This is a serious warning to the rich and powerful. The way we treat domestic workers, subordinates, and the less privileged matters greatly before God. Oppression, exploitation, and injustice may go unnoticed by men, but they never escape divine attention. God is deeply concerned about how the vulnerable are treated.
Scripture cautions us not to remove ancient boundaries or exploit the fatherless, for their Redeemer is mighty and will plead their cause (Proverbs 23:10–11). Likewise, the cries of unpaid workers and the oppressed rise to God, and He responds with righteous judgment (James 5:1–6). Let us live with justice, compassion, and the fear of God.
Action Nugget : Examine your relationships and dealings with others, especially those under your authority. Make amends where necessary and commit to treating everyone with fairness, dignity, and godly compassion.
