Exhortation:
The lyrics of a song often reveal its source and purpose. Words are powerful—they can either build up or tear down (Proverbs 18:21). Therefore, not every melodious or emotionally appealing song glorifies God or edifies the listener. As believers, we must learn to discern whether a song originates from the Kingdom of Light or promotes values contrary to God’s truth.
Songs can be inspired by the Holy Spirit, the flesh, or the devil. Spiritual songs are birthed by the Holy Spirit, filled with biblical truth, and directed toward the praise and worship of God. They strengthen faith, encourage holiness, comfort the weary, and draw hearts into a deeper fellowship with Christ.
Paul, therefore, exhorts believers to be filled with the Spirit, “speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:18–19).
The music you listen to will eventually influence your thoughts, attitudes, and actions. If a song stirs lust, pride, rebellion, immorality, or draws your affection away from God, it is not spiritually healthy, regardless of how popular or melodious it may be.
Instead, let “the word of Christ dwell in you richly” as you sing “psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God” (Colossians 3:16). Choose music that glorifies God and nourishes your spirit.
Prayer Nugget: Father, fill me continually with Your Holy Spirit and help me to delight in songs that glorify You in Jesus’ name.
