Text: 2 Kings 17:33; 2 Corinthians 6:14β18
Author: Pastor Adedeji Fadehan
Exhortation:
When you try to mix kerosene with water, it is only a matter of time before the two separate. It is like trying to mix iron with clay; the two cannot become one. In the same way, purity and integrity demand that we do not blend our devotion to God with practices that contradict His Word.
It is also like marriage: a faithful spouse does not share marital devotion with another. In the same way, you cannot serve both God and mammon (Matthew 6:24). Syncretism is the blending of different, often contradictory, religious beliefs and practices into one system.
We see this in 2 Kings 17:33, where the people feared the Lord yet served their own gods. Sadly, this still happens today: some profess Christ but continue to serve village idols, compromise their faith for business partnerships, or accommodate other deities to avoid offending people. They are Christians on Sunday, Muslims on Friday, and worshippers of other gods when situation presents it.
But God’s Word is clear: βAnd what agreement hath the temple of God with idols?β (2 Corinthians 6:16). We cannot claim to belong wholly to Christ while sharing His place with idols. God calls us to come out from among them and be separate (2 Corinthians 6:17). Our devotion to God must be exclusive, undivided, and uncompromising.
Prayer Nugget: Father, deliver me from every form of syncretism and divided loyalty. Give me the courage to reject every practice that competes with Your place in my life, and help me to serve You in spirit and in truth, in Jesus’ mighty name.
