Text: Acts 2:1-4
Author: Pastor Adedeji Fadehan
Exhortation:
Recall that at salvation, the Holy Spirit comes into the believer, in fact, if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, they do not belong to Christ- Romans 8:9b. The Spirit of Christ makes you Christ-like in character. The fruit of the holy spirit is expected to play out in the life of such- love , joy, peace, endurance, patience etc Galatians 5:22ff
The Holy Spirit on you (also called the anointing) happens through the baptism of the Holy Spirit. John baptized with water for repentance, but the Lord Jesus Christ is the one who baptize believers with the Holy Spirit and with fire: Matthew 3:11. But how can we be sure that a man has been baptized with the Holy Spirit?
Back in the days we were undergraduates in the university campus, one of my friends asked me whether it was possible to be baptized in the Holy Spirit without speaking in tongues. I am sure this same question is still in the heart of many believers today.
The initial evidence of the baptism of the Holy Spirit as seen on the day of Pentecost was spelt out in today’s text. The word of God says, “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” Acts 2:4
Speaking in other tongues refers to the supernatural ability to speak in a language not learned by the speaker, as described above. This occurrence was not a one-off experience but it was repeated in the other parts of the scripture whenever the Holy Spirit was poured out.
Peter was divinely sent to the household of Cornelius to show them the way to salvation. While peter preached, the Holy Spirit fell on the entire household, and they spoke with tongues and praised God (Acts 10:44–46).
Several years after Pentecost, Paul came across some believers in a part of Asia Minor called Ephesus; they were baptized in the water but weren’t baptized in the Holy Spirit. Paul enlightened them and when he had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spoke with tongues, and prophesied- Acts 19:1-6.
Key Nugget: If you are already in Christ but aren’t baptized yet, I have got good news for you, Jesus Christ is willing to baptize you today, if only you will ask him.
