Exhortation:
The tongue is a small part of the body, yet it has the power to shape lives and destinies. Today’s Scripture declares, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof” (Proverbs 18:21). Our words are never empty; they can heal or wound, build or destroy, bless or curse.
A sobering lesson is found in the story of Jacob and Rachel. When Laban accused Jacob’s household of stealing his household gods, Jacob confidently declared, “With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live” (Genesis 31:32), not knowing that Rachel had taken them. Although Scripture later records Rachel’s death during childbirth (Genesis 35:16–19), Jacob’s rash words remind us to be extremely careful about the declarations we make, especially when we do not know the full picture.
Emotions can tempt us to speak carelessly, but wisdom teaches us to guard our tongues. In moments of anger, frustration, or confidence, choose words that align with God’s heart. It is always safer to bless than to curse, to pray than to pronounce judgment, and to let grace govern our speech.
Prayer Nugget: Father, set a watch over my mouth and guard my tongue from every careless word. Fill my lips with wisdom, grace, and blessing, so that my words will bring life and honour to You, in Jesus’ name.
