Text: Colossians 4:6; James 1:19

Exhortation:

God desires that our words be “always with grace, seasoned with salt” (Colossians 4:6), so that they will benefit both us and those who hear them. The tongue has tremendous power—it can ignite conflict or bring peace. Consider Gideon’s gentle answer to the Ephraimites, which calmed their anger (Judges 8:1–3), and compare it with Jephthah’s harsh response in a similar situation, which resulted in a tragic civil conflict (Judges 12:1–6). The difference was not merely the situation but the words they chose.

That is why Scripture instructs us to be “swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath” (James 1:19). Wise people process their words before releasing them. A careless tongue can separate close friends, destroy relationships, and deepen wounds, while a gracious tongue can reconcile enemies, restore broken hearts, and build lasting peace.

Make your tongue an instrument of blessing. Let your words encourage the discouraged, comfort the hurting, correct with love, and speak hope into hopeless situations. Bless rather than curse, for when our speech is governed by God’s wisdom, our tongues become true channels of life, healing, and blessing.

Prayer Nugget: Father, let my words always be seasoned with grace and wisdom. Give me the discipline to listen before I speak, and make my tongue a channel of peace, healing, encouragement, and blessing, in Jesus’ name.
