Exhortation:

There are at least three levels of preparation: inadequate preparation, just-enough preparation, and more-than-enough preparation. Yesterday, we considered the danger of inadequate preparation; today, our focus is on those who prepare for just enough. Many people make preparations, but they fail to make room for unforeseen circumstances.

From childhood, my mother taught me that whenever you embark on a journey, your financial preparation should go beyond what you think is sufficient. It is better to have extra money because you never know what unexpected expenses may arise along the way. Preparing for just enough leaves you vulnerable when the unexpected happens.

The parable of the ten virgins illustrates this perfectly (Matthew 25:1–13). The five foolish virgins took oil for their lamps but made no provision for a delay, while the five wise virgins carried extra oil. When the bridegroom delayed, the foolish ones ran out of oil, but the wise ones were ready. Their extra preparation made the difference between being admitted to the wedding feast and being shut out.

Many remain average because they are accustomed to preparing for just enough, often leaving themselves stranded when challenges arise. May you never be stranded in the journey of life! Go the extra mile in prayer, fasting, giving, studying God’s Word, and evangelism. Do not settle for the bare minimum when you can prepare for more than enough.

Prayer Nugget: Father, deliver me from the habit of doing just enough. Give me the grace and discipline to go the extra mile in my spiritual life and daily responsibilities in Jesus’ mighty name.
