Text: 1 Samuel 17:1-51

Exhortation:

One of the major crises that has plunged the world into the current situation we find ourselves today is not poverty, illiteracy, sickness or insecurity but poor leadership. If leadership can be fixed, the other things will fall into place.

Just like the sheep needs the direction of the shepherd, leadership is about providing direction to a followership in need of it. The leader is the one saddled with the responsibility of creating a sense of purpose for his followers. He casts the vision that the followers run with. This means the leader cannot afford to be clueless. His body language can either make or mar those he leads.

In today’s text, we see that for 40 days Goliath threatened the army of Israel. The army generals were clueless and even the king Saul of Israel was crippled with fear. Nobody knew what to do to silence the adversary who kept cursing and terrorizing the nation for several weeks.

Nothing changed until the Lord brought David, a 17-year old shepherd boy, into the picture. By the inspiration of the Spirit of God, David knew exactly what to do in that ugly situation. He approached the king and asked for permission to confront the giant. They tried to dress him up in military uniform but he rejected it because he was not used to them. Rather he preferred to go simple.

The shame of Israel was removed and the Lord gained victory for the nation that day because someone took charge of the leadership.

The word of God says, “Where there is no vision [no revelation of God and His word], the people perish but happy and blessed is he who keeps the law [of God].” Proverbs 29:18

Prayer Nugget: Father, by your Spirit, please always help me to know what to do and to do it at the right time in Jesus name.
