Exhortation:

If you have the opportunity of meeting the rich man who found himself in the torment of hell,  whose story our Lord Jesus Christ told in Luke 16 and you ask him, “Sir, if you have the privilege to live in this world again, how would you live?”I believe he would say he is determined to live differently, shunning every form of evil . But it was too late! Because  it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.-Hebrews 9:27.

This brings the question up again which says, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” Mark 8:36-37

During his life time,  the rich man’s major sin was his self-indulgent misuse of wealth and unconcerned behaviour towards the needs of others, particularly the poor beggar Lazarus. He prioritized his own comfort and lavish lifestyle, neglecting the plight of the needy folks around him.

From his negative treatment of Lazarus, the poor beggar around him,  we can infer that when others around him were hungry he gave them nothing to eat (but crumbs that fell from his table); when they were thirsty he gave them nothing to drink. He wasn’t hospitable to the poor around him but instead allowed his dogs to lick their sores. He neither clothed the poor nor care for the sick. He cared less about those in desperate situations- Luke 16:19-31; Matthew 25:41-46.

The Preacher gave an admonition that “It is better to go to a home where there is mourning than to one where there is a party, because the living should always remind themselves that death is waiting for us all.” Ecclesiastes 7:2

Key Nugget: It is the perfect will of God that we be holy by being selfless and by loving our neighbours as ourselves.

Bible in One Year: Job 1-4
