Exhortation:

It is one thing to attain greatness but it is completely another thing to maintain greatness. The one who is not sufficiently prepared for greatness will not keep it for long. God therefore has a way of preparing his own candidates for it.

David was God’s candidate of greatness but he needed to be groomed and specially prepared for it in God’s School Of Greatness. This was the reason he was not crowned king the day he was anointed by Samuel. It took several years after his ordination before he ascended the throne. He had to conquer giant and fight many wars both internal and external.

While he was running away from King Saul for his dear life, several frustrated souls like him surrounded him and he became their leader. Initially, about four hundred (400) homeless people gathered around him- 1 Samuel 22:2; later they grew to six hundred (600) – 1 Samuel 30:9-25.

Their relationships with David transformed their lives over time and they became David’s mighty men during his kingship-2 Samuel 23:8-39.

All the while God was preparing him for the throne. He had to learn humility, tenacity, leadership and patience from his suffering and hardships. He needed all the above qualities to maintain his greatness when he eventually attained it.

No wonder the psalmist said, “It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.”  Psalm 119 vs 71

Has God given you dreams and visions of greatness but it seems the going is tough for you right now? Don’t be discouraged, but brace yourself up and learn all God has to offer you and when you eventually attain the promised greatness it will last for a long time.

Prayer Nugget: Father, grant me the patience to learn all you have for me in the school of greatness in Jesus name.

Bible in One Year: 2 Samuel 17-22
