Numbering Our Days

Text: Psalm 90: 9-12

Author: Pastor Adedeji Fadehan

Exhortation:

Life is a gift, but it is also fleeting. Moses, the man of God, who wrote Psalm 90, reminds us of the brevity of human existence. He says that our days are like grass that flourishes in the morning but withers by evening. This is why he prayed, “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”

To “number our days” does not simply mean to count them but to value them — to live with an awareness that time is short and must not be wasted. It is to live our life on Earth with Heaven in view. It is to live in full realization that we are strangers and pilgrims on Earth. When we realize that every day is a loan from God, we begin to live purposefully, carefully, and wisely.

Many people live as though life will never end. They delay decisions, postpone obedience, and waste time on trivial pursuits. But wisdom teaches us to invest our time in what is eternal — our relationship with God, loving others, serving faithfully, and walking in holiness.

The truth is, the length of our days is uncertain. James says life is like “a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away” (James 4:14). The wise response is to live each day as though it could be our last, not in fear, but in readiness — making the most of every opportunity to glorify God.

When we number our days rightly, we learn to say no to distractions and yes to God’s will. We put our trust not in riches, power, or fleeting pleasures but in the Lord who alone gives meaning to life.

Prayer Nugget: Father, I thank You for the gift of life and for every new day You have granted me. Holy Spirit, help me to live with eternity in view, making choices that glorify God and prepare me for heaven in Jesus name.
