Text: John 10:10
Exhortation:
Abundance could imply something existing in an extremely plentiful or over sufficient quantity or supply. The purpose of Christ’s coming to the Earth is to offer the world abundant life. In John 10:10, Jesus said, “The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.” John 10:10
Was the Lord referring to abundance of money and other material possessions? Luke 12:15 helps to clarify that, “And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” Therefore, the abundance Christ referred to in today’s text is not physical but spiritual.
Physical riches are great but God is more concerned about our spiritual blessings which are the true riches because they are eternal, lasting beyond our brief stay on Earth. Romans 14:17, says, “For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.”
True abundant life consists of an abundance of love, joy, peace, and the rest of the fruit of the Spirit spelt out in Galatians 5:22-23. We are admonished to set our affection on things above, not on things on the earth (Colossians 3:2). This implies cutting off every earthly distraction and focusing our time, energy and resources on developing a closer relationship with God, seeking His kingdom and all its righteousness.
Rest assured that all your physical needs (not wants) will be met, while you dedicate your life to heavenly pursuits. Abundant life shall be yours in Jesus name.
